some excellent mapping resources for the uk can be found at Nearby.org.uk - Location Searches - Points of Interest - UK - GB and Ireland. Now all I need are some decent OS type maps for the USA.

the best maps I've seen for the US are the USGS Topo maps, eg http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=39.451806&lon=-84.515245
Which can be reached on the nearby site from 'Map Links [gpsgames.org]'
