Tek care…. deer ont road!

Friday, October 21st, 2005

This particular little feature on the Columbus Dispatch Newspaper’s website talks about deer in Ohio and where and when the peak times of accidents with them happened in 2004.
I was surprised that Franklin County (which is where we are) had so many collisions (more than 400) because it is a pretty well developed area, so I wouldn’t have thought there were that many deer around to collide with!
Main points of the feature — October to December is the peak time of year when the deer are most active, and 6 to 7pm is the peak time of day when the most accidents occurred.
So watch out for the deers me dears!!

Facts about Ohio…

In the book I’m devouring at the moment… Big Cherry Holler by Adriana Trigiani… there’s a part where one of the characters tells another that the state bird of Virginia is the Cardinal….
Well I was up in arms — it can’t be! The Cardinal is the state bird of OHIO.
Well it turns out it’s the state bird for BOTH. I don’t know for how many others too!! (I’m almost curious enough to find out!) Okay I was curious enough and turns out it is the state bird for SEVEN states!!!! Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, and North Carolina!
In discovering this… I stumbled across a very valuable resource about the 50 States!! This website is called Enchanted Learning.com and looks like it’s set up for subscription by home-schoolers or just regular students to have access to loads of info.
They have fantastic fact pages on each of the states though — and here’s a link to the OHIO page!!
Enjoy!!
