In the book I'm devouring at the moment... Big Cherry Holler by Adriana Trigiani... there's a part where one of the characters tells another that the state bird of Virginia is the Cardinal....
Well I was up in arms -- it can't be! The Cardinal is the state bird of OHIO.
Well it turns out it's the state bird for BOTH. I don't know for how many others too!! (I'm almost curious enough to find out!) Okay I was curious enough and turns out it is the state bird for SEVEN states!!!! Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, and North Carolina!
In discovering this... I stumbled across a very valuable resource about the 50 States!! This website is called Enchanted Learning.com and looks like it's set up for subscription by home-schoolers or just regular students to have access to loads of info.
They have fantastic fact pages on each of the states though -- and here's a link to the OHIO page!!
Enjoy!!
