Down memory lane...

Today when Andy brought our things home from the library, one of the items (which I had reserved) was a 3-cd set of Sesame Street songs.

I grew up watching the show Sesame Street, singing the songs and loving the characters -- which led to my love of the Muppet Show.

It made me think of how I want to do a scrapbook album of things that I grew up with -- so that if/when I ever have kids, they can look back through the things that influenced me as a child. Things like the Muppet Show and Peter, Paul & Mary, Disney movies, Sesame Street, Berenstein Bears and so forth.

an offer we ... um had to refuse...

Well, the good news is that last weekend we had an offer on the house.

The bad news is that it was (as the estate agent put it) "complicated" -- basically it was from a developer who wanted to get his mortgage for 10,000 more pounds than he was going to pay us for the house, so he could use that money as his deposit for the mortgage and therefore get a better interest rate etc. Well.

When we heard the offer's conditions, my first reaction was... is that legal? So Andy had to tell the estate agent we'd have to get ahold of the solicitor before deciding on the offer. He phoned the solicitor on Monday and then had to have the agents phone the solicitor and then when we spoke to him he said it isn't fraud necessarily.... but nearly!!

so alas, we had a very nice offer in on the house, but unfortunately had to turn it down. :(

Happy 6th Anniversary to us......

Sunday was our 6th Anniversary! We enjoyed a very nice (HANDS PLEASE!) meal at a local (HANDS!) Irish (HANDS PLEASE!) pub called the Claddagh -- unfortunately we were seated near to the kitchen door where a overly enthusiastic manager kept shouting at his staff.

Andy bought me some beautiful flowers -- a mix of roses and irises and a balloon! Basil has already shortened the balloon's ribbon by a few inches.

One of the funniest things was opening each others cards -- we have gotten to be so much alike that Andy confessed he intentionally purchased a "To My Darling Wife" card because he didn't want us to buy the same one! Even so, the cards still looked very similar, both having a bit of ribbon down the length of the card near the fold, tied in a bow -- on the card he gave me the ribbon was a cream color, and on the one I gave him it was black. He was joking when I opened mine about how the ribbon was meant to be a garter -- so I said "wait til you open yours!!"

We treated each other to anniversary donuts on the way to church, and the Pastor (who is also the teacher of the sunday school class we're in) thought it was funny -- he asked us what the "traditional" gifts for that anniversary are... i.e. paper, linen, etc. and I piped up 'donuts' -- which really confused another couple in the class (who thought I was serious!!).

stunned...

Last night I was helping Dad get dinner ready and he was a bit agitated about something and seemed in a hurry. I asked why and he said he needed to get to the funeral home after dinner.

I asked who had died and he said "Bob Hoffmanson" and mentioned he was a former Delaware City Council member. Then it hit me -- "wait a minute," I said, "do you mean Bob Hoffmanson or Bob Hoffman's Son". And then he said Bob Hoffman's Son -- had died in Iraq. A sinking feeling came over me. I asked what his son's name was and it is Justin -- who I knew from when I was going to church at Delaware Grace Brethren. Justin was in the youth group when I was a youth leader there. I was just stunned. Having been in England, I hadn't kept in touch with very many people and didn't know what everyone was up to.

Justin was a Marine Sgt who re-enlisted to go back to Iraq -- the news station has a good writeup of him and also a video clip of his family.

It's so sad -- he's got two younger brothers, Tyler and Travis (who I knew a bit better than I knew Justin) and Justin was serious about a girl who he joked about proposing to as soon as he got off the plane to come home.

Please pray for his family -- and for the other Marines still over there -- and especially for my friend Marcie's hubby Tony who is about to be deployed at the beginning of September.

Facts about Ohio...

In the book I'm devouring at the moment... Big Cherry Holler by Adriana Trigiani... there's a part where one of the characters tells another that the state bird of Virginia is the Cardinal....

Well I was up in arms -- it can't be! The Cardinal is the state bird of OHIO.

Well it turns out it's the state bird for BOTH. I don't know for how many others too!! (I'm almost curious enough to find out!) Okay I was curious enough and turns out it is the state bird for SEVEN states!!!! Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, and North Carolina!

In discovering this... I stumbled across a very valuable resource about the 50 States!! This website is called Enchanted Learning.com and looks like it's set up for subscription by home-schoolers or just regular students to have access to loads of info.

They have fantastic fact pages on each of the states though -- and here's a link to the OHIO page!!

Enjoy!!

snuffles seem to be lessening...

so hopefully I am nearly back to myself!!

I still have the occasional sneezes and snuffles and a cough or two, but it feels like I'm almost better.

During the course of my cold I read a bunch of fantastic books though! I polished off:

Big Stone Gap by Adriana Trigiani (am now halfway through Big Cherry Holler -- the sequel to the Gap)
The Dead Don't Dance by Charles Martin (an EXCELLENT read -- Christian author)
Thr3e by Ted Dekker (also Christian author -- thriller)
Fame by Karen Kingsbury (also Christian author -- this is the first book in her second series that picks up where the first series left off -- all about a family called the Baxters -- first series includes 5 titles (in order of course!) Redemption, Remember, Return, Rejoice, and Reunion)
Wrapped in Rain again by Charles Martin <--- this is probably my most favourite book of all time.

I'm a librarian.

I've read thousands of books.

So when I say it's probably my most favourite book... that means a LOT! It was just such an excellent story with superb characters and it just drew me in and I was mesmerized -- I think I read it in 3 sittings over the course of one day... 320 pages just FLEW by.

So it is definitely on my recommended reading list!!

Apparently they're making a made-for-tv movie out of his first book (the Dead Don't Dance) and this second book would make a great film.

mama always said too many video games were bad.......

they could even kill you!!

This article found on Yahoo news is about a South Korean guy -- only 28 years old!! -- who suffered from a heart attack after playing computer games for 50 hours straight (only took short breaks for the necessary and for napping briefly on some sort of makeshift bed). Ironically he'd recently quit his job to spend more time gaming....

Have cold... will snuffle...

I came down with a cold sometime on Saturday ... didn't sleep well that night (it was really hot and all I did all night was snuffle).

So I'm doing my best to get rid of this cold by the time we're supposed to go meet Marcie & Tony and the kids on Thursday night.

It's now Weds. morning, and I'm feeling a bit better (I sound awful -- sore throat and snuffly) but at least when I stand up and move around the room the world doesn't suddenly spin wildly anymore.

I got to talk to Liz-called-Bert yesterday -- oh man I miss her! We had a great conversation. I miss hanging out with her over coffee at the play areas while the kids run round and have a blast. And I miss my Canadian chats with Bjorn.

I really miss all the folks from WHBC -- you all made such a deep impression in my heart that I don't think it will ever be the same.
