Now that i am using ZipGenius on the pc I was unable to open a .tgz file within this application - at least not on my xp desktop - the w2k machine opened it, but was unable to extract (weird). In the end I ended up downloading wingz11.zip which did the trick.

ZipGenius doesn't seem to like GnomeZip/Tarballed archives for some reason. You might want to install 7-Zip for those ( http://www.7-zip.org/ ).
