New email client suggestions?

Arrggggghhhh - I've had it with theBat! being so unstable on this new pc. Keeps freezing at very strange times and I can't risk getting my mail store corrupt on the machine. The strange thing is that it was nice and stable on the old machine - both running xpsp2 and this one is a clean install so should be even less chance of crashing.
So, I'm in the need for a new (free) email client. I do like thunderbird but the lack of being able to type any old email address into the from field is the thing that stops me using it. I must have the ability to type in sales@ or fred@ or dontbotherspammingthisaddress@ in the from field so I can track down where I am getting spam and filter on it. From what I could tell with Thunderbird this is not possible. The feature of being able to run "macros/programs" on certain events is not critical now either as Geocaching Swiss Army Knife now does the email checking within the application.
Any suggestions? (oh - and the ability to import theBat! files would be fantastic)

You can add multiple 'identities' to an account - Tools, Account Settings, select your email account and click the 'Manage Identities' button. That allows you to add a variety of From: addresses. It's not the same as being able to simply type one in but it's better than nothing.

wouldn't be practical as I do this about 10-15 times a day and they would be completely different each time. This is another reason I can't use outlook.

I gotta say, I'm with Neil on this one. I use Thunderbird exclusivly now. Well, when I'm not using Gmail that is. :)

I didn't know about the ability to Manage Identities! I'll have to start using that feature!

I did what you are doing. Created an email identity for each site I gave and email address to. I'm not doing that so much now due to using Gravatar, but when I don't use Gravatar, I still enter a unique email address. I then have to go to my domain and enter a forward for it (spammers started using my domain in the from address of their spam messages). I've never been able to respond easily to messages from those usique addresses because I didn't think I could.

I used The Bat! for a while, but wasn't fully happy with it, same with PocoMail. They both had bugs that allowed external graphics to get rendered allowing spammers to know that the message was viewed.

Thunderbird has been perfect in every reguard for me.

it is not the receiving of emails that is a problem (i have a catchall
in email) but the sending of email. Any correspondence that I have
with external people, apart from those that I trust have unique email
address's and there are just too many to manage with identities.

I was suprised about the webbug feature in theBat - I've not had a
problem with that at all, but it may have been fixed in a recent
upgrade. I'm currently using version 2.12 and version 3 is out, but
I'm reluctant to pay for an upgrade to v3 if the support is
nonexistent.
